Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to arrange a place to stay after getting there, but when I arrived, a big convention was taking place and every single budget hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I thought perhaps I could bed down in the terminal – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes all night. Not knowing quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a city-bound bus and began walking in the direction of the casino, reasoning I might spend the evening in an establishment that was open all night. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for acing the admissions interview the next morning, yet, as a broke student, I couldn’t afford.

We could all use more individuals with such compassion.

Apparently, I appeared out of place because a young woman noticed me walking aimlessly through the city center and wondered if I was OK. I recounted my predicament and right away she suggested I could crash on the ground of her dormitory at the local university – an ideal turn of events, given that my the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering some food: a leftover sandwiches she had from her work shift. I had access to a hot shower and a secure location to rest for the evening.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she accepted as a woman letting a man she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. At that time I existed within a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she did that – but still deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up study at the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of kindness. My sincere desire is that karma has returned her generosity tenfold. We could all use more people like that woman.
