Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her American tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
