Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
