Los Angeles Experiences Unprecedented High Temperatures Only One Week After Major Winter Weather.
After enduring heavy downpours that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now seeing abnormally warm conditions for this time of year.
Record-Shattering Temperatures
During the day Friday, the mercury soared to 91°F (33°C) in central LA, per data from meteorologists. This exceeds the previous daily record for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was established just last year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were labeled on forecast charts for the region.
Public Health Warnings
The weather service issued a warning that Friday's weather posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their advice included:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Reversal
This dramatic increase in temperature arrives just after a powerful storm system that pummeled the area recently. That event brought thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, triggering mudslide risks for millions residents.
Sadly, the storm also resulted in a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Forecast Ahead
Forecasters predict some relief is expected. Readings were predicted to drop to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city by overnight.
Additional areas that reached 90°F featured Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to reach the high eighties.
In the coming days, downtown LA can see weather in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures likely for the week ahead.
