Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these medications must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
