The A$150 Million Men Evolving into a Human Highlight Reel
This year's National Basketball Association campaign tips off now, marking the initial occasion in a ten years that Australia's pair of biggest hoops names â Ben Simmons and Patty Mills â are without a roster spot.
Their absence indicates a transition period, as Australian backcourt duo Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as key starters for contending teams, with recently signed huge contracts making them some of Australiaâs highest sporting earners.
But they are not alone. A group of 14 Aussies are set to compete for playing time around the league, ranging from veteran centres Jock Landale and Duop Reath, emerging wings in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to intriguing rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Out to Prove Himself
Following lengthy negotiations with the Bulls, Giddey finally signed his new deal worth $100m ($153m) over four seasons recently. Itâs a huge contract for the Melbourne native, but in NBA terms it is cheap for his role and reputation as a primary ball-handler. Hesitation for the Bulls management to pay top dollar means the young star enters this season with a point to make.
Having been traded by the Thunder at the beginning of last season, Giddey observed as his old team stormed to the NBA championship in his absence. As the Bulls aim to reach the postseason in the weaker East, he will have to demonstrate his scoring and defence are starter-worthy or else he may fall back towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
Daniels signed the identical contract as his counterpart recently, and after his MIP honor last year, the Hawks guardâs career has taken off in the city following his exit from the Pelicans. He is now lauded as one of the NBA's best perimeter defenders, and led the league in takeaways with three per game â more than one full takeaway per game greater than the tally of the runner-up.
Performing next to flamboyant Trae Young in Atlanta, the youngster can be successful this campaign as a secondary ballhandler and elite defender as long as the Hawks make the playoffs. But if he can improve his three-point shooting, which was below league average last year, and continue to develop his passing and attacking, he could become one of the association's most versatile players.
Johnny Furphy On Highlight Watch
Pacers forward the rookie has burst onto the scene as a crowd favorite in the state following a succession of highlight-reel slam dunks in exhibition games. His acrobatics led league figure Pat Beverley to describe him as the âbest white dunker weâve seen in a whileâ, and an invite to the All-Star slam dunk competition could be on the table.
Following logging just 8 mpg per game over 50 games in his debut season, the former Maribyrnong College player is in contention for a Pacers lineup that might lean towards young players following injury to star playmaker Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor An Outside Shot
Guard Proctor dropped in the NBA Draft down to the 49th pick, where playoff hopefuls the Cavaliers picked him. The Cavs are favourites to reach the Finals from the East, so it would be rare for a first-year player taken in the second round to see much playing minutes. But the Australian has seen minutes in pre-season, and his pro-level shooting offers him a chance to contribute.
Minutes Crunch Looms for Experienced Group
Seasoned centre Jock Landale has a opportunity to claim the starting five position in the Grizzlies given highly-touted Zach Edey will miss the opening of the season after a surgical procedure.
In Portland, Duop Reath is the experienced reserve to youthful big men Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play consistent action if the Blazers become in the hunt. His teammate Matisse Thybulle is likely to be deployed as a defensive specialist off the bench.
In the Hornets, Josh Greenâs off-season shoulder surgery has resulted in him with no return date to come back. The player still has a contract for the upcoming year, but wonât want to give his colleagues at the developing Charlotte too much head start. And injury has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee complaint and has been absent for key exhibition chances in Dallas.
Australian NBA Players Fighting for Roles
Additionally, there are those who are not expected to see much, if any, court time this season. Thirty-eight-year-old Joe Ingles is back in Minnesota, but seems to be little more than a big brother keeping Anthony Edwards focused.
Rookie Rocco Zikarsky is likely to be developed by Minnesota Timberwolves through their G-League team. Other rookies Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the more seasoned Luke Travers will be hoping to win playing time alongside his compatriot for the Cavs.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Seeking Contracts
Should anyone question Mills was planning to end his career, he answered them with a training clip shared on his accounts recently, demonstrating the 37-year-old remains sharp and focused on landing another league deal.
Simmons' intentions is anyoneâs guess after an break in his homeland, angling and playing with a football. Although he took to Instagram recently to reject suggestions he was done, the former All-Star â an elite player as recently as 2021 â has not yet return to the league.
