The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... Currently.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Viewer Reception
One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Has Vince Gilligan See the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the writers are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a superior concept. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
