The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
