The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial European tie against City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight berth.

At 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him playing time in pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to represent either country at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a official full international.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose Spain, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team chase future success.

Following his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
