This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the identical stature as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the holiday season,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
