Trump Demands Jailing of Chicago Mayor and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Deploy in City

Ex-President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on his platform Wednesday morning. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic party.

Trump's statements coincide with the deployment of state military personnel in the Windy City area under orders from the federal administration, despite strong objections from state officials such as the governor and mayor.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump has sought to have a Black man unjustly detained," Johnson responded on that day. "I am staying anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, declaring: "I will not yield. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of elected officials resisting his authority. What remains on the road toward full-blown authoritarianism?"

As of midweek, military troops from the Lone Star State had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, an army base roughly 80 kilometers from the city, as the federal government advances with its aggressive crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has called Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", despite police data indicate significant drops in many offenses, including murders.

On Wednesday, 200 state guard members were expected to deploy to the region, with an additional three hundred state military personnel preparing to mobilize, according to reports. Officials reportedly stated the troops would avoid police functions but would secure ICE officers and their facilities.

Soldiers in combat attire with state guard patches were observed at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Vehicles marked "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered portable toilets and essential items. Mobile units were arranged in lines. Additional fencing was placed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities imposed flight restrictions over the military base for safety concerns until 6 December.

Federal authorities has escalated deportation operations in the city in the past month, triggering demonstrations, particularly near an processing facility in a Chicago suburb.

Earlier this week, state and city filed a lawsuit against the federal government, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, asking a federal judge to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on Chicago and Illinois, calling it "unlawful and risky".

A court hearing on their case is set for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also signed an directive on that day banning federal immigration agents and related personnel from using city-owned property as staging areas for deportation efforts.

The governor has charged the president of using troops as "political props" and "pawns".

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Pritzker said that the president is trying to "rationalize and normalize the deployment of military personnel under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old federal law restricts the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. Yet, the president has stated he would be prepared to invoke the emergency powers, which permits a president to send regular army in states that are failing to suppress an insurrection or are defying federal law.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has dispatched or discussed sending troops to at least 10 cities, including major metropolitan areas and California cities like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, arguing that the military presence is essential to combat crime and defend immigration agents.

Statistics indicates that most violent crime nationwide has decreased in recent years. In Chicago, for instance, homicides were down 31% to 278 through August, per police data.

A recent poll published on Wednesday found that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the sending of troops without an external threat.
