A extensive search and rescue mission is actively in progress in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated sailboats loaded with aid cargo journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Maritime Rescue Missions Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and search planes to locate the missing boats, which were had on board at least nine personnel, per a official statement.

The vessels had been scheduled to reach Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their docking, the navy said.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

Cuba has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island endures widespread nationwide blackouts.

"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are equipped with proper navigational gear and communication devices," an official involved in the effort commented.

The nine crew members are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"We are co-operating fully with the authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Previous Humanitarian Shipment

Earlier in the week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and warmly received another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the island.

That boat, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, brought photovoltaic panels, drugs, formula milk, bikes and foodstuffs.

Larger Political Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded efforts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""severe" supply shortages, with more than 50,000 operations postponed in Cuba amid energy rationing.

Diplomatic measures have increased over the past months, with comments from several officials emphasizing the complex situation regarding relations.

Reacting to previous proposals, a prominent official from Cuba stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Accounts suggest that initial phases of discussions commenced, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was committed to using every available asset at its reach to discover the vessels and guarantee the security of the people on board.

As of now, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
